Membership and marketing teams are facing a tougher environment than ever before. Members have more choices for professional development, networking, and information. Attention is fragmented across countless channels, and earning someone’s time and trust takes far more than a single email or ad.
Our 2026 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report reinforces this reality. Membership growth continues to be a challenge for many organizations, with only 38% of associations reporting an increase in membership this year. At the same time, many associations are struggling to articulate the value of membership in a way that feels clear, relevant, and compelling, making it even more important to deliver the right message through the right channels at the right time.
The encouraging news? Across the organizations we work with, we’re seeing a consistent pattern. The strongest results aren’t coming from one breakthrough tactic or marketing channel. They’re built on integrated campaigns that combine smart audience targeting, multiple touchpoints, ongoing optimization, and a willingness to adjust based on performance.
Here are a few examples:
Turn Interest into Action with Retargeting
It’s incredibly rare that a prospect is ready to register, join, or purchase the first time they visit your website. That’s why retargeting continues to be one of the highest-performing digital strategies.
In one event campaign, a focused retargeting strategy generated 138 attributed conference registrations, more than $102,000 in revenue, and a 778% return on investment. Rather than allowing interested visitors to disappear, the campaign kept the event visible throughout their decision-making process.
The takeaway: Don’t treat a website visit as the end of the journey. Consider it as the beginning of a conversation.
Build Awareness While Driving Conversions
Even when registration is already open, awareness still plays an important role. Prospects may know an event exists, but they often need repeated exposure to understand the value, remember the opportunity, and decide it’s worth prioritizing.
For one conference, connected TV (CTV) advertising extended campaign reach through premium streaming platforms while registration was open, keeping the event in front of warm audiences throughout the active registration period. The campaign reached more than 80,000 households, generated over 104,000 completed video views, and contributed to a 44% increase in conference revenue across the overall paid digital campaign.
The lesson isn’t simply to use CTV. It’s to recognize that awareness and conversion don’t have to be separate phases. Repeated exposure can reinforce value and help move prospects from interest to action while registration is underway.
Capture Demand When Prospects Are Ready to Search
Some prospects already know what they’re looking for. The key is making sure your organization appears when they begin searching.
A membership acquisition campaign built around high-intent Google search terms generated more than 1,600 membership conversions while maintaining an $8.64 cost per acquisition and delivering a 6.7x return on investment.
Search marketing works because it reaches people at the exact moment they’re actively looking for solutions.
Let Data Tell You Where to Invest
Marketing works best when it focuses resources on the people most likely to respond.
In one certification campaign, engagement scoring identified prospects showing the strongest buying signals. Combined with direct mail, email, digital advertising, and telemarketing, the campaign contributed to a 14% year-over-year increase in exam registrations.
Technology matters, but the bigger lesson is using data to prioritize effort instead of treating every prospect the same.
What Association Marketers Can Learn
These examples span conferences, membership, and certification, but the principles are remarkably consistent.
The organizations seeing the strongest growth today aren’t necessarily spending more. They’re marketing smarter. They’re combining channels intentionally, using data to guide decisions, and continually optimizing based on results.
As our 2026 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report makes clear, sustainable growth requires more than a single campaign or tactic. It requires a coordinated strategy that meets members where they are and guides them through the entire decision journey.
